Make Fitness Fun
The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is committed to the healthy development of our community’s youth. YMCA Kid Fit is a combination of exciting, vigorous fitness activities coupled with fun, engaging nutrition education lessons for children ages 2-12. Our goal is to ensure all children participating in YMCA programming have a solid foundation for a healthy future.
All children enrolled in our 23 afterschool programs located in Pinellas County Schools participate Monday through Friday in YMCA Kid Fit. Children take part in 60 minutes of specially designed, disguised fitness games three times each week and 60 minutes of structured, fitness classes twice each week. In addition, children learn food groups, how to identify healthy foods and their components, MyPlate, how to read food labels and more through nutrition education three times each week as a part our comprehensive food program, which includes a healthy snack and dinner.
Children enrolled in the Lake Maggiore Shores and Bardmoor YMCA Preschool Academies participate Monday through Friday in 30 minutes of daily, specially designed, disguised fitness activities and nutrition education twice each week. Our preschoolers develop motor skills, foundational fitness and nutrition knowledge, and experience new fitness and nutrition concepts through first exposure, building a healthy foundation.
Children 12 and under will participate in structured physical activity and nutrition education activities specially designed for kids. From 5 - 5:45 pm on Tuesday and Thursday at the Jim & Heather Gills YMCA, and 6:15 – 6:45 pm Tuesday and Thursday at the Bardmoor YMCA.
YMCA’s Kid Fit is a part of the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg’s larger Healthy Active Families Initiative. An initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive support structure for children and parents by improving awareness and access to programs that address preventable chronic disease for parents, and creating an overall healthier environment in the home, school, and after school setting.
