"My pain level is 85% less than it was a year ago. I love coming to the Y because it is so up-beat and fun. I feel like I am part of a super, diverse community here."
Linda participates in Silver Sneakers Cardio, Bone Density and/or Spin Classes as well as works out in the fitness center two to three times per week. Secondary to extensive brain trauma, Linda is legally blind, deaf in one ear and has several other central nervous system deficits. On top of these challenges, 2 years ago it was revealed that she has an extensive degenerative joint disease which has tremendously hampered her capacity for normal mobility. With a degree in Human Nutrition from Florida State University, Linda has always highly valued physical fitness. So, in 2010 following physical therapy, she came to the YMCA looking for a workout setting that would comfortably meet her exercise needs. "The quality of the instructors is really impressive," Linda explains. "The kindness, sensitivity and professionalism of the entire staff have made me feel like I've found a community family. The Y has helped me gain renewed self-confidence and also offers me a perfect reason to get out of the house! No one ever tells me that I'm not capable of doing an activity, but rather, professionally assist me with a modification. My pain level is 85% less than it was a year ago. I love coming to the Y because it is so up-beat and fun. I feel like I'm part of such a super, diverse community here.
