The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is the #1 Florida provider of the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program, an innovative health, exercise and wellness program helping older adults live healthy, active lifestyles.
Several Medicare supplemental insurance plans provide the added benefit of a Y membership. For the adults covered under these plans, their Y membership is free. As a SilverSneakers® member, you are entitled to all the same facility access and benefits of any other Y member. Check with your insurance carrier or bring your supplemental insurance card to the Y and the front desk can check on your eligibility.
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers® ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.
Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers® ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is used for standing support, stretching, and relaxation exercises.
SilverSneakers® Yoga will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
Active Older Adults
Our active older adults represent some of our most loyal YMCA members. At the Y, seniors have a variety of options to keep active, while growing in spirit, mind and body. Discovering new friends and new opportunities adds joy to life. The Y provides active older adults ages 55 and older the chance to volunteer their time and talents with others.
Physical activity is essential in maintaining a higher quality of life and independence among seniors. In addition to group exercise classes and low impact water exercise, our senior programming also features fun social events, group outings, and health education seminars.
