For the past several decades the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg has devoted the full extent of its resources into effecting change in south St. Petersburg most vulnerable communities with the end goal of breaking the cycle of generational poverty that plagues our city. Our work here includes intensive academic and behavioral intervention programming for neighborhood youth, hunger prevention programs, obesity prevention with a focus on ending health disparities, and so much more.

This comprehensive approach to serving the needs of area youth includes a semi-annual Back to School celebration at the Childs Park YMCA serving over 800 children each August and January. For students, particularly students with a history of struggling in school, going back to school can be a time of anxiety and intimidation often exacerbated by the lack of proper materials crucial to a student’s success. Access to adequate school supplies not only directly affects a student’s ability to complete school tasks, it also impacts self-esteem.

The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg considers ensuring students are prepared for school as one of its greatest responsibilities. Together we are teaching our children the importance of education and of helping one another.
