Add-On Specialty Camps: Culinary Camp

March 7, 2017

Learning still goes on over the summer, but not in your typical classroom setting. In this case, it’ll be in the kitchen!

At Culinary Camp, your child will spend the week learning about food and where it comes from, hands-on preparation of recipes, basic instruction of cooking and baking techniques, gardening, proper food handling, food preparation, food presentation, kitchen safety, healthy eating/nutrition, manners and etiquette, and even table settings.

But their learning can go even beyond the culinary skills, and here’s how:

Math Skills

Doubling a recipe requires addition (or multiplication) skills, halving it requires division and recipe fractions bring math applications into the kitchen with kids often not even realizing they’re practicing math!

Reading and understanding step-by-step directions, adding ingredients in sequence and techniques are all important components to creating the finished product.

Real Life Science

Cooking is a science. Too much, too little or the wrong timing and you’re likely to not have the final product you were hoping for. Cooking provides an opportunity for kids to get hands-on experience with basic science.

Cooking allows kids to get instant feedback, which helps them learn and grow in self-knowledge.

A fun and relaxed atmosphere in the kitchen can offer an opportunity to talk, about anything! Parents can take advantage of this to not only see what their child learned at camp, but also learn a little bit more about what’s going on in their daily lives.

Life Skills

Cooking is a life skill, much like learning to read, or swimming. Start the cooking lessons at a young age so the transition to adult cooking is easy later on.

Last but not least, cooking is fun! Having fun in the kitchen can build positive memories.

With all the benefits of teaching kids to cook, and no limits with starting, what are you waiting for? Add-on the culinary specialty camp to your child’s summer schedule.
