YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg to Host 18th Annual YMCA Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast
Since 2001, local religious leaders and community members have gathered to reflect on important issues, challenges and commonalities.
St. Petersburg, FL – October 22, 2019 – On Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00AM at the St. Petersburg Coliseum, the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is hosting the 18 th Annual YMCA Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, presented by the Speer Foundation. Since 2001, this unique event has provided a venue for the community to share a meal and develop stronger, more unified relationships. This year’s keynote speaker is Emmy Award-winning actress and author Sonia Manzano.
Sonia Manzano is best known for her role as Maria on Sesame Street. Additionally, she published her memoir, Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx, in 2015. A first generation American of Latin descent, Manzano’s tale is one of perseverance and courage as she overcame countless obstacles to become one of the most influential Latinas in television.
Religious leaders across all faiths will be presenting prayers during the event, including representatives from U.S. Central Command, the St. Petersburg District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Vida Nueva St. Pete, The Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, Presbytery of Tampa Bay, and Congregation B’nai Israel. St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman will also be giving special remarks.
At the event, the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg will be presenting Dr. James P. Gills and Mrs. Heather Gills with the YMCA Chester James Award. This award recognizes an individual from the community who lives a life filled with compassion, integrity, and optimism.
