YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg launches esports at Speer YMCA
YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg is pleased to announce the launch of its esports program at the newly opened Speer YMCA. In response to the ever-growing reliance on technology, this innovative initiative aims to provide the community with a space for responsible gaming, skill development and multi-generational engagement.
Speer YMCA's Technology Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art gaming consoles, computers and customized curriculum, making it an ideal environment for various esports activities. The Technology Lab will host esports leagues, open-play sessions, STEM workshops, birthday parties, Technology Camp and technology courses, providing a dynamic and inclusive space for all.
Recognizing the financial challenges associated with gaming, the Y is proud to offer this affordable alternative for families. Y Members and Non-Members have access to brand new gaming equipment, eliminating the need for families to invest in expensive controllers, consoles, computers, headsets and more.
The Technology Lab at Speer YMCA serves as a communal space, allowing safe and supervised use of technology and gaming programs. It encourages interaction, communication and engagement among parents and children participating in tournament-style competitive play or open play.
In addition to esports, the space will be used for programs aimed at enhancing computer skills for older adults to refine their computer skills, covering topics such as internet browsing, scam prevention, safe email use and Microsoft Suite Products, empowering seniors to stay connected and navigate the digital world securely. The lab will also be used to nurture coding proficiency for children and promote community-wide programming and digital skill development.
"The Technology Lab offers an environment that engages the community and encourages problem solving with the help of our supportive staff. Students work through problems in groups, learn how to motivate teammates, encourage each other and celebrate together. Those practical skills translate to collaborative environments at school, work or in sports," said Tequena Akintonde, Director of Middle Schools and project lead for this innovative program.
The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg believes in the power of technology to unite and educate the community. Individuals of all ages are invited to learn, grow and thrive together in this supportive and engaging environment.
Financial assistance for this program is available. For more information about the esports program, please visit www.stpeteymca.org/esports
