Jim & Heather Gills YMCA Gets a Facelift for the Future

Jim and Heather Gills YMCA Renovation

In 2025, the Jim & Heather Gills YMCA will complete upgrades to the 24-year-old facility that serves a broad swath of the St. Petersburg community. Improved parking, enhanced, lighted athletic fields, upgraded locker rooms, and improvements to the swimming pool and HVAC system will all ensure the facility is ready to handle the growth in the community it serves. The YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg sold property adjacent to the YMCA facility to a local developer who will build a mixed-use residential-commercial property, designed to build community and connect community members. The YMCA facility will anchor that area and be the leader in wellness amenities for the community.

This redevelopment comes on the heels of the opening of the Speer YMCA at the end of 2023. The three YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg wellness centers now serve more than 20,000 households in St. Petersburg, and touch countless lives through community health and family-oriented community events.

The YMCA Stepped up to Offer Hurricane Relief after Devastating Storms

Madiea Beach Afterschool Emergency Care

When the St. Petersburg area was hammered by back-to-back hurricanes in 2024, we had the opportunity to provide relief and support to our community in a variety of ways.

  • Because our facilities received little damage, we were able to open our doors to community members who needed to shower, charge devices, or just spend time out of the heat and humidity.
  • To help area parents get back to work before schools reopened, we offered a hurricane relief camp, where kids could spend time with friends, swim and have some fun.
  • We joined forces with Pinellas County Schools to offer hurricane relief care for Madiera Beach elementary and middle school before- and afterschool care participants who lost use of their school for several months due to hurricane damage.
  • We made space available for Chick-fil-A and Convoy of Hope to set up a meal distribution site for area community members to drive through to get a hot meal, water and other supplies.Watch »
