Youth Karate

Youth Karate at the YMCA

The YMCA Youth Karate program introduces children to the fundamentals of karate in a fun, supportive environment. Participants will develop discipline, confidence, coordination, self-defense skills and respect while learning age-appropriate techniques and progressing at their own pace.

What is Karate? Karate is a Japanese (Okinawan-rooted) striking art built around discipline, precision, and form. Training centers on kihon (basic techniques), kata (choreographed sequences practiced solo), and kumite (sparring). Techniques include punches, knife-hands, blocks and kicks, with a strong emphasis on hand strikes and stable stances. Kids progress through a colored belt system, and the culture stresses respect, focus and self-control. Sparring tends to be point-based and controlled, and many programs introduce it gradually.
